Florida Turtles can be spotted in the Bourdigou from April to August during sunny, hot periods. To see them you will have to be patient and if possible use binoculars or have a good zoom on your camera as they are easily scared creatures. They're found mainly on the sides of the river, sunbathing to keep warm! Florida Turtles are a species that come from America, largely imported in France and other countries as pets. Lots of them are abandonned by families that don't know how to handle a turtle that can grow up to 28cm and weigh more than 3kg. This type of turtle felt at home in the humid zones around the mediterranean sea and reproduced so much that they are now considered at being invasive and endangering local species : Cistude d'Europe et l'Emyde Lépreuse. Sharing the same environment, these turtles compete with local species and are winning so far !
